Eufy SpaceView Baby monitor
As people keep asking about the babyphone we are using, it’s a Eufy Security SpaceView 720HD.
Highlights of this device are:
- Good video quality with large screen. At first having video surely adds some anxiety, as you simply can’t stop watching and look closer if everything is fine and little baby is still breathing (for which 2x Zoom is really helpful…). Later, video is really helpful as you can have a glimpse without disrupting your little precious if you want to know if he/she/decide-for-yourself-later? is still sleeping.
- Support for a second camera. Useful if you have 2 kids, or if you want to keep one permanently attached in the kid’s room while taking the other one on the road.
- Cameras can be moved remotely. Handy when they start to explore the world for themselves.
- Decent range. No bad feelings when having a beer with the neighbours.
- Both camera and handset are powered by micro USB. It’s not USB-C, but I don’t care. Portable usage with a powerbank is a great thing regardless of the cable type. Bonus: Everybody has a USB power supply at home, so it doesn’t matter if you leave it at home when visiting somebody.
Neutral:
- While Eufy did not have their best days security-wise lately, this device does not have any network connection, so things should be safe (or at least limited to local vulnerabilities).
Not so good:
- There’s no indicator that the handheld device is turned on. A silent baby looks the same as a turned off device or an empty battery. To make sure, you have to press a key. I was a bit afraid about this, but in the last 2 years, this hasn’t been an issue once.
When we bought this, all alternatives we found with video support cost much more while having a stamp-sized display with the resolution of an old Casio Watch. I was this close to hacking something together with a Raspberry Pi before I found this. While this would have been fun, it was way more fun to use all this time playing with the baby.
